American Soldier is getting a book deal! Published by LBF Books, Soldier Life is already available for pre-order through Amazon andBarnes and Noble. FWD is responsible for the Soldier Life Book Design, as well as the authors website design.

Update » The book has been put on hold, due to a dispute between the author and the publisher. AS needs time to find another publisher. If you are a publisher, I would love to put you in touch with the author.

WP Themes Competition

Alex King is currently hosting a competition for designers, to see who can come up with the best theme for the new WordPress 1.5. It will be ending on the 25th, but it already has had a great turnout.

If you run a WordPress 1.5 powered website, I recommend checking out the neat themes.

I entered two themes of my own. The Stucco Theme, and the Narnia Theme.

Army Times

The Army Times, in their Blogs Of War Article, has recognized the writings of two of my past clients. My younger brother, Heath at Pass The Brass, and American Soldier. Both sites are great reads, if you are interested in the thoughts and rants of current soldiers.

Here are the snippets included on their online version.

? American Soldier

A self-described gung-ho GI, this blogger is readying to deploy to Iraq for a second time. Although he refuses to divulge his real name, the blogger is a sniper assigned to a National Guard unit. He says he aims to enlighten his readers on what life as a soldier is really like, versus the misrepresentations he believes are shown by mainstream media.

? Pass the Brass

Pfc. Heath J. Coleman, a military policeman based at Camp Humphreys, South Korea, often writes humorously, invariably laughing at his own mistakes. His posts, which he says are all true, often end with a message or lesson.

Richer Type With sIFR

Mike Davidson of Mike Industries has been working on a project. One that allows designers to rid themselves of lack of rich typography when dealing with browsers. He calls it sIFR, for Inman Flash Replacement. Don’t ask what the ’s’ is for, because I have no idea. My only guess is scalable.

In working through sIFR, I began to think of ways browser manufacturers could quickly implement anti-aliased custom typography. The only possible answer I could think of was licensing Flash?s rendering engine.

Basically, it allows you to use any font you could ever want, on your website, by harnessing the power of flash. Being that it is completely new, the only tags you can have this attributed to are H1, H2, and Div. But with as fast as it has taken off since its release, this could easily be the next big craze among designers.
